Striking the Right Balance

By Peter Wolfgramm, GIA Director of Operations

Many school board members struggle to find the proper balance between being overly involved and not being engaged at all. One pitfall is to micromanage—getting pulled into day-to-day decisions better left to teachers and administrators. The other is to disengage, losing sight of accountability and the strategic direction that the governing body should provide. Striking the right balance isn’t easy, and many boards find themselves swinging between these extremes.

‍When boards micromanage, it can erode trust, slow down decision-making, and blur the roles between governance and administration. Principals and early childhood directors may feel second-guessed and frustrated. Conversely, when boards disengage, they fail to provide clear vision, oversight, and accountability, leaving school leaders without strong direction or meaningful support.

The most effective school boards understand that their role is governance, not leadership. They set priorities, monitor outcomes, and ensure that the ministry stays aligned with its mission—while empowering principals and early childhood directors to execute the work.

For overseeing large or complex ministries, boards don’t just need good intentions—they need a clear framework to guide their actions. By grounding their work in proven principles, school boards can avoid the pitfalls of micromanagement and disengagement, and instead oversee the ministry with confidence, clarity, and impact.

This is where Grace in Action’s new module of 7 Pillars of an Impactful School Board becomes a valuable part of the solution. This asynchronous package is a practical framework to help boards stay focused on what matters most: proper oversight, strategic clarity, strong governance practices, and supportive relationships with school leaders. Rather than reacting to every issue or stepping back too far, the initial pillar helps board members operate with purpose and consistency.

Here are the 7 pillars:

  1. An Impactful Board Provides Appropriate Governance and Oversight

  2. An Impactful Board Supports the Leader Personally and Professionally

  3. An Impactful Board Has Clarity with Member Role and Contribution

  4. An Impactful Board is Solid with Policy and Risk Management

  5. An Impactful Board is Foundationally Aligned

  6. An Impactful Board is Strategically Focused

  7. An Impactful Board Has Efficient and Productive Meetings

Each session is designed to be a total of 15-20 minutes of content, discussion, and application for boards to work through at their own pace. A board could easily utilize one session’s content at each regular monthly meeting.

Each session contains the following:

  • ‍A ‍5-minute video

  • 5 survey questions

  • Discussion questions

  • Additional resources
